Review Film: PINTU TERLARANG/ FORBIDDEN DOOR

For you who interested in watching film, here can be a useful review as “Pintu Terlarang” is one of best fims that I have been watched. I recommend this film to be watch.

“Pintu Terlarang” or “The Forbidden Door” is a 2009 Indonesian physiological thriller film. It is an adaptation movie of Sekar Ayu Asmara’s 2004 novel of the same name. Despite the fact that Pintu Terlarang did not get successful domestic box office, this film was well-received in many International Film Festival, such as International Film Festival Rotterdam and Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.
“Pintu Terlarang” was directed by Joko Anwar, who also directed “Janji Joni” (Joni’s Promise) and “Kala” (Dead Time). Besides, Joko wrote script for several films, such as “Arisan!”, “Quickie Express” and “Fiksi”.  He was successful in directing Pintu Terlarang. Joko proves his talent as a promising Indonesian young director although he does not have formal background film. Not only did he direct “Pintu Terlarang”, but also he wrote the script of this film.
Gambir (Fachri Albar) is a successful sculptor, and he entitles his sculptures as “Maternal Moods”. He makes his sculptures in various stages of pregnancy, naked in various poses, and each of them contains a dark secret, as the suggestion of his wife, Talyda (Marsha Timothy). There is a mysterious door in his house, but Talyda prohibits him to open it. One day, Talyda tells Gambir about her unplanned pregnancy and she wants to abort it. After visiting an abortion clinic to abort his baby, he starts to receive messages from a mysterious boy who asks his help. The boy sends him messages “Tolong Saya” (Help Me). Gambir becomes worried and anxious; hence, he wants to help the boy. All the clues lead him to a mysterious building, Herosase. Herosase is a secret place where the members enjoy horrifying and disgusting home videos. Gambir watches the video of that mysterious boy who is abused by his mother. He is getting worried and anxious, and he wants to help him eagerly. Knowing the boy is dead makes him frustrated, and then he starts questioning his sanity. However, nothing is what it seems.  Soon after that, all the secrets of his wife, his beloved mother, Menik Sasongko (Henidar Amroe), his best friends, Dandung (Ario Bayu) and Rio (Otto Djauhari), and the art gallery owner, Koh Jimmy (Tio Pakusadewo) whom he considers as his Godfather are revealed. He executes them brutally and sadistically in bloody Christmas Eve dinner. After that, he opens the forbidden door, and the answer of his questions about the mysterious boy is uncovered.
“Pintu Terlarang” is one of the best Indonesian films.  The film brings social issues, such as child abuse and abortion. The plot is brilliant, and the characterizing is perfect. Also, the chemistry of Fachri Albar and Marsha Timothy is flawless. Maybe it is because they are the real couple. The acting of the actors and actresses was excellent. The dialogues, art direction, cinematography, and music score are successful to horrify the moviegoers. For those who do not get used to watch such kind of this film, “Pintu Terlarang” may be confusing. Watching this film needs extra concentration in order to understand the whole story. However, you will be shocked by its twist-ending. The ending is unpredictable and beyond your imagination. This is what makes “Pintu Terlarang” is different from other Indonesian films.
To sum up, in our opinion, “Pintu Terlarang” is highly recommended for those who want to see something different from most of Indonesian films. “Pintu Terlarang“ is smart and extraordinary. This film is really worthy to watch. After watching this film, you will get an unforgettable movie-going experience. What are you waiting for? “ Pintu Terlarang” is available on DVD or VCD in your favorite DVD stores.
